Argumentaire
The past decade has seen a remarkable proliferation of publications on magic and the occult. Many of these are focused on textual accounts of occult beliefs and practices and focus on specific cultural or historical contexts. Forging conversations across fields and disciplinary boundaries, this workshop aims to bring together scholars working on relevant materials in Africa, Europe, West and South Asia and the Iberian Atlantic. Many of the materials and practices to be discussed are marked by intercultural or intersectarian dimensions, ranging from those developed in conditions of co-existence to those forged in conditions of coercion and resistance to slavery. Taken collectively, they highlight the need for approaches that transcend traditional disciplinary limits in ways to be addressed in the conversations and discussions arising from the presentations.
